Research startup adoption beyond announcements

Distinguish business formation, sign-ups, repeated use, paying demand and durable adoption.

A launch announcement, a registration, an active account and a retained paying customer measure different stages. The US Census Business Formation Statistics provides data about applications and formations, offering useful ecosystem context. It does not establish product-market fit for an individual company or show that a newly registered business has durable customer demand.

Our suggested adoption worksheet starts with the specific behaviour that would demonstrate value. Define an eligible customer, an activation action, a repeat-use interval and a meaningful commercial outcome. A headline user count can combine free trials, inactive accounts and repeat users unless its definition is explicit. Preserve the denominator and cohort dates alongside the resulting percentage.

Combine quantitative observations with structured customer interviews. Ask what customers used before, what changed after adoption and what would make them leave. Record contrary cases as carefully as successful ones. A campaign can temporarily lift registrations without improving retention; comparing cohorts after a similar period helps separate acquisition effects from changes in product usefulness.

Use external datasets to frame the market, then treat company-specific claims as evidence requiring their own source. Where results are self-reported, label them and state the missing validation. A researcher’s output should explain the adoption mechanism, the weakest assumption and the next test. A founder can use the same structure to choose a small experiment without pretending that a popular category or a funding announcement guarantees customer demand.

Questions to investigate

  1. Which observed behaviour demonstrates repeated value for the target customer?
  2. Does the adoption denominator exclude irrelevant or inactive accounts?
  3. What evidence would separate temporary campaign activity from retention?
