A research checklist for the jobs report

Employment, unemployment, participation and wages describe different parts of the labour market.

The US employment report combines two major surveys. The establishment survey measures payroll jobs, while the household survey supplies employment status and the unemployment rate. Their populations, definitions and sampling differ. A person with multiple jobs can contribute differently across the measures, so a disagreement between the series is not automatically an error.

Start with a small table: payroll change, unemployment, labour-force participation, hours and earnings. Keep units and seasonal treatment consistent. A falling unemployment rate can have more than one explanation; examine employment and participation together before inferring stronger hiring. Likewise, the number of jobs added does not by itself describe the quality or distribution of those jobs.

For a founder researching hiring conditions, break the question into location, occupation and industry. A national headline may be distant from the skills and salary bands needed for one team. Our proposed workflow pairs the release with actual vacancy evidence, recruitment lead times and observed candidate availability, then records whether the local evidence supports the broader story.

Separate the first publication from later revised data in your notebook. Use a comparable sequence of releases rather than choosing a single favourable month. Before linking employment to currency or market direction, document alternative explanations and the information already anticipated. The useful output is a traceable account of changing conditions, with uncertainties stated, rather than a claim that a jobs number mechanically determines a trade.

Questions to investigate

  1. Are payroll employment and household employment answering the same question in this comparison?
  2. Which industries explain the change?
  3. Would revised observations change the original research conclusion?
