Audit market-data freshness before interpreting a chart

Observation time, retrieval time, release time and revision history are different pieces of evidence.

A dashboard can be fetched now while displaying an earlier observation. Record the source observation date separately from the time your system retrieved it. Economic series can be monthly or quarterly; market observations may be intraday; reference FX rates follow their publisher’s schedule. A universal live label hides these differences and makes comparison less reliable.

Read the series metadata before transforming the data. Units, frequency, seasonal adjustment and aggregation determine the meaning of a value. A monthly average and a month-end value can disagree without either being wrong. FRED’s documentation links its data transformations, frequency handling, missing-value treatment and originating sources, making it a useful starting point for this check.

Our suggested freshness log records expected frequency, last observation, last successful retrieval and the reason for a missing update. Preserve the most recent valid value with its age, but do not generate a replacement observation simply to make a chart appear continuous. Distinguish a publisher’s closed-market calendar from an upstream error and from an unsupported dataset.

Revised economic data creates another issue: today’s history may differ from what a researcher could have known at an earlier decision date. A retrospective claim should identify whether it uses current revised data or contemporaneously available observations. Save source links and snapshots where appropriate. Freshness is part of the analysis itself, because a convincing explanation built on mismatched dates can still answer the wrong question.

Questions to investigate

  1. What is the observation date rather than only the retrieval time?
  2. Were the compared series aggregated to the same frequency?
  3. Does this retrospective analysis use information available at the time?
