Crypto price, volume and liquidity: three different questions

A last-traded price cannot show how much activity exists or what a larger order would encounter.

A crypto price needs a venue, pair and timestamp. BTC quoted in US dollars is not the same observation as BTC quoted in a stablecoin on another exchange. Exchange documentation distinguishes market-data endpoints and their outputs. Keep that identity attached to the value instead of treating any single last-traded price as a complete global market measurement.

Volume describes trading over a specified interval; liquidity concerns the ability to transact with limited price impact. They are related but not interchangeable. A market can show substantial historical volume while its current order book is thin. The best bid, best ask, spread and available depth answer questions that a line chart cannot resolve.

Our proposed research worksheet stores the price interval, candle granularity, volume units and source. Where only price history is available, label depth and execution information as unavailable. Compare like-for-like windows before claiming activity rose. Do not substitute a smooth chart or an AI explanation for missing order-book observations, and do not describe a venue-specific figure as consolidated global volume.

To understand a move, investigate several possible mechanisms rather than naming one cause from price alone. A contemporaneous announcement, a change in participation or an exchange-specific incident may be candidate explanations; each needs independent evidence. Keep the market observation separate from the explanation, add a confidence note and record which extra dataset would settle the uncertainty. That makes the analysis useful for research without manufacturing certainty about future returns.

Questions to investigate

  1. Which venue, pair and observation time does the price represent?
  2. Is reported volume denominated in base units or quote currency?
  3. What depth evidence would be needed to assess price impact?
